The World No. 1, Novak Djokovic (8-3), withdrew from the Miami Open. The 36-year-old made the official announcement on Saturday on social media days after a loss at Indian Wells against the 20-year-old Italian, Luca Nardi, in a three-set, 4-6, 6-3, 3-6.
"At this stage of my career, I'm balancing my private and professional schedule." I’m sorry that I won’t experience some of the best and most passionate fans in the world,” Djokovic wrote.
In the BNP Paribas Open Tennis tournament, the Djoker was knocked out in the third round by the lowest-ranked player he played, whoever managed to beat him in his prolonged career.
Nardi ranked at No. 123 and had made it to the main draw as a "lucky loser" because he was a substitute for an injured player who had pulled out before the first round.
That was Djokovic first time competing since the loss in the Australia Open in January against Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals.
Last season, he won three of the four majors in 2023 to sit alone with 24 Grand Slam titles for his career.
Having accomplished so much in Tennis, one thing is missing from his trophy shelves is a Gold medal at the Olympics, and the Djoker has shown interest last year in the upcoming 2024 Olympics in Paris.
"I look forward to the Olympics," Djokovic said after beating Tallon Griekspoor at the Dubai Tennis Championships 2023.
"I hope I'll be able to play healthy for next year in Paris. It's going to be played on clay at Roland Garros, so I'm familiar with those grounds. I hope the best Olympic result for me will come there."
The six-time Miami Open Champion may be feeling the effects of father time, and his recent withdrawal from the tournament could be a sign of his dedication to ensuring that he is in the best possible shape for the upcoming Olympics in Tennis, which will take place from July 27 to August 4.
