BOCA RATON, Fla. - Florida Atlantic Women's Tennis (2-1) won their first back-to-back game of the season on Sunday 28, 5-2 against the Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU), at Kimberly V. Strauss Tennis Center.
FAU suffered a setback in doubles play, losing 2-1, which resulted in FGCU securing the doubles point.
The pairs of FGCU Ida Ferding and Fanny Norin defeated the freshman Panna Bartha and the sophomore Carla Galmiche, 6-3, on court #1.
Despite FAU Owls junior Victoria Gomez O'Hayon and junior Millie-Mae Matthews winning their match against Lola Glantz and Madeleine Joffe of FGCU 6-4 on court #2, the Owls couldn't hold on to the narrowly contested court #3 against Isabella Colmenares and Gabriela Macias, who defeated the redshirt junior Amber McGinnis and the junior Lexi Silna in a tiebreaker (2-1), granting FGCU the decisive point for a score 7-6 (7-0).
However, FAU regained control during the singles matches, ultimately claiming a 5-2 victory over their in-state rival, and managed to shift the momentum in their favor.
On court #2, the Spaniard O'Hayon leveled the overall score with a dominant 6-2, 6-0 against Ida Ferding of FGCU.
FGCU momentarily regained the lead when Colmenares defeated the French Galmiche, 6-2, 6-4 on court #3.
The Owls pulled away when the Pompano native McGinnis tied the game at 2-2, defeating Joffe in straight-set 6-2, 6-2.
FAU then secured the victory with victories from Silna defeating Kopel 6-4, 6-3, and Bartha defeated Norin 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 on courts #4 and #1, respectively.
FAU concluded the match with a victory when the junior Millie-Mae Matthews, clinching the win with a third-set 10-point set, defeated Gantz of FGCU, 4-6, 6-2 1-0 (10-6), resulting in the final score of 5-2.
