Fort Lauderdale, Fla. – In a landmark event for women's football in the Caribbean, Haiti made its first-ever FIFA Women's World Cup appearance, taking on England at the Brisbane Stadium in Brisbane, Australia. Despite a valiant effort, the game ended with a 1-0 victory for England in Group D.
Haiti's debut performance at the WWC 2023 showcased its potential on the world stage. They put on an impressive display against the European Champions as Kerly Theus, the goalkeeper standout with ten saves during the match.

From the outset, Haiti showed determination, with their forward Roselord Borgella getting an early opportunity in the 14th minute. Melchie Dumornay fed her a through ball behind the defense and got inside the box, but her shot went wide of the post.
In the 27th minute, VAR intervened when Haiti's Batcheba Louis was called for a handball in the penalty area to reward England with a penalty. Georgia Stanway converted it in the second take in the 29th minute to give her team the lead of 1-0 after the referee deemed Theus had moved off her line the first time to deny her.
In the 50th minute second half, Melchie Dumornay tried to surprise England's GK Mary Earps with a powerful shot from just outside the box after stealing the ball from Lucy Bronze. However, Earps read the developing event and stopped the potential equalizing goal.
In the 81st minute, Haiti had a golden opportunity when Roseline Eloissaint, who subbed into the second half, froze the defense. She entered the penalty area facing Earps to deliver a low shot from inside the box. But again, Earps maintained her calm to make the night-saving attempt for England with her effort stretched left leg to secure the narrow 1-0 victory.
Despite the loss, Haiti showed great promise and resilience in their inaugural Women's World Cup match. The team will look to build on this experience when they face China RP at the Hindmarsh Stadium, Adelaide, Tarntanya, Friday, 28.
