Inglewood, Calif. – Mexico clinched their ninth Concacaf Gold Cup championship on Santiago Gimenez's late strike, who entered the match as a second-half substitute to secure a 1-0 victory over Panama in the 2023 Gold Cup Final on Sunday evening at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, California.
The "Nuestra Final" went down in front of a house pack of over 70,000 fans that came out to support their teams in the final.
In the first half, both teams created opportunities. Panama, with Ismael Diaz, had an early chance in the second minute but failed to produce a clean shot on goal. On the other hand, Mexico tested Panama's Orlando Mosquera with a straight shot from Uriel Antuna at the goalkeeper in the 12th minute.
Panama had another moment to score in first-half stoppage time when Anibal Godoy's shot narrowly missed the target, eluding Mexico's goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa.
Panama stayed resilient throughout until the 87th minute. However, Mexico captured the golden opportunity a minute later in the 88th minute. Gimenez, who subbed into the game in the second half, swiftly maneuvered past the defender in the midfield to outrun the defense to get into the box and shot off a left-footed to the back of the net to open the score.
The goal sealed a thrilling 1-0 victory for Mexico, crowning them as the deserving champions of the tournament to close out the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup 2023.
