Fort Lauderdale, Fla. – Inter Miami CF has secured its spot in the round of 32 from the group stage with an impressive 4-0 victory over Atlanta United, making them the first club to do so.
Not only did they advance, but they also emerged as winners of their group, which grants them the privilege of hosting the winner of South Group 2 on August 2nd.
With the notable additions of Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets to their squad, Inter Miami became immediate contenders for the Leagues Cup trophy. Their performances in the initial two matches have indeed justified the high expectations.
The journey began with a thrilling 2-1 triumph over Cruz Azul. The highly anticipated debut for the Inter Miami CF star Messi showcased his brilliance, netting the decisive goal on a free-kick in stoppage time and securing three crucial points for his new club.
In their second game, the team seems already gelled into good chemistry on the pitch. Only 22 minutes into the game, Messi scored twice against Atlanta. He opened the score in the 8-minute and scored the second on an attack he led from the midfield when he passed to Robert Taylor inside the box, who crossed it back to him for the finish to lead 2-0.
The team added a third goal just before the half in the 44-minute of a pass from Benjamin Cremaschi, who settled the ball to Taylor inside the box and just whipped a left-footer to the far post.
Messi got his first assist for the team when he broke loose with the intercepted ball in the midfield and passed it to Taylor, who finished in the far post with his left foot for Inter Miami 4-0 against Atlanta.
