New York Red Bulls defender 47, John Tolkin, could not believe Callender denied his shot in the 40th minute, leaving him all smile.
From the referee, Pierre-Luc Lauziere’s first blown whistle of the night to start the game, both teams counter-attacked each other and led to Nicolás Stefanelli drawing a penalty for Inter Miami CF in the first 5 minutes.
After the VAR (video assistant referee) confirmed the penalty conceded by the Red Bull defender, Kyle Duncan, who was shown the yellow card, Leonardo Campana stepped up but shot the ball straight to the goalkeeper, who launched to his left to deny him.
Inter Miami CF created many other opportunities before the half but could not find the target. Meanwhile, the Red Bulls were becoming more dangerous on target; however, Drake Callender gave Inter Miami one of his best performances to deny New York from scoring and probably displayed why the USMNT (United States Men National Team) called him for upcoming training camp for the Concacaf Nations League semifinal.
Coming out of halftime, the Red Bulls made two substitutions that would quickly pay off in the 52nd minute when Luquinhas led a lone attack from the midfield into the box and shot off the right post, and Tom Barlow, who just came in after the halftime was inside the five yards opened the score for the New York Red Bulls 1-0.
Despite the effort, Inter Miami CF could not avoid their fourth loss in MLS following the 0-1 loss to New York Red Bulls.
"We believe in this group of players, I believe in this group of players,” said coach Phil Neville post-game as the team plays one more game at home before the next one on July 1.
Inter Miami CF will play D.C. United Saturday 3, 2023, at 7:30 PM at the DRV PKN Stadium
