The Parisian-born football sensation Kylian Mbappé reportedly said he wants to leave Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), where he has established himself since 2018 as one of the brightest talents.
The news has sent shockwaves throughout the footballing community, leaving fans and pundits alike wondering about the future of the talented forward.
Eclipsed to stardom from his teen years, Mbappé was nothing short of a young blockbuster. After he helped AS Monaco secure the Ligue 1 in the 2016-2017 season, the opportunity came for the young star to sign for his home team PSG on a whopping deal that made him the second highest-paid player at that time and the highest-paid teenager ever.
With his incredible speed, agility, and eye for goal, the 2018 World Cup winner helped PSG wins five Ligue 1 titles and three Coupes de France. He led the club to its first-ever UEFA Champions League final in 2020 and ranked as the all-time top goal scorer over 212.
PSG invests heavily in top players like Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior transferred from Barcelona, who became the most expensive player ever in 2017, and Lionel Messi, who joined the team on a two-year contract in 2021-2022.
However, with the world's best players in the club, the team's chemistry of the players seems to have always been off, leading to several rumors in the past off-season that Mbappé wanted to trade, but the team officials were quick to deny it.
As Messi announced on June 7 that he is headed to Inter Miami CF when his contract expires later on the 30th, shockwaves are resurfacing that Mbappé wants out of PSG. However, this time, the team official gave Mbappé the ultimatum to sign an extension preventing him from possibly leaving the club as a free agent in June 2024, looking to cash in the current open transfer window until September 1.
In an official statement released today through the Agence France-Presse (AFP), the superstar affirmed it was a decision informed to the club in 2022, and it's nothing new.
Kylian Mbappé dismissed Le Parisien's rumors as "LIES" on Twitter and to the AFP, "I have NEVER discussed any contract renewal with PSG," he said. "The board has been informed since July 15, 2022, of my decision not to extend beyond 2024."
Beyond the 2024 season at the PSG, it is unclear what new challenge Mbappé might go after in his outstanding career. It is sometimes usual for superstars, after achieving so much in their early careers, to want a fresh new start.
Top-tier European clubs like Real Madrid have shown interest in the past and closely monitoring Mbappé's situation and touted as the front runners for his signature.
Whether or not Mbappé decides to leave after his contract expires, a player of his caliber would be invaluable to any team he is a part of. As such, the Qatar club owner and Mbappé are playing the financial chess game unfolding currently.
Kylian Mbappé expects to continue with his contract into the next season for Paris Saint-Germain, whereas PSG explores to transfer him before the contract is up.
