Davie, Fla.The renewed Florida Derby between Fort Lauderdale United FC (3-4-2) and Tampa Bay Sun FC (4-3-3) ended in a dramatic 1-1 draw on Sunday evening, at the Beyond Bancard Field. The match showcased Fort Lauderdale’s resilience, as a stoppage-time goal by substitute Anna Henderson not only leveled the score but also ended the club’s three-match losing streak.

Fort Lauderdale conceded an early goal in the first half, placing them in a precarious position. However, the team demonstrated determination and grit, especially in the latter stages of the match. Henderson’s 93rd-minute equalizer marked her first goal of the season and a pivotal moment for the team.

In a post-match interview, head coach Mears reflected on the team’s performance and significance.

“It’s been tough ... in terms of results [and] performances,” he admitted, acknowledging the challenges posed by recent injuries and a drop in form. Despite these obstacles, Mears commended his team for their spirit and perseverance. “They showed a lot of spirit, a lot of togetherness. ... I was really proud of them,” he added, emphasizing the importance of staying resilient during difficult times.

Anna Henderson, the match’s hero, echoed her coach’s sentiments.

“As the game went on, us as a team really grew into it and looked a lot more like ourselves than we had in previous games,” she remarked. Henderson expressed confidence in the team’s ability to score late, noting that it “felt like it was coming” during the final ten minutes.

With their losing streak snapped and a hard-fought point secured, Fort Lauderdale United FC has laid the groundwork for recovery and more success as the team looks forward to hosting DC Power FC (2-6-4) on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2024, at 7:30 p.m.
