SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The United States (U.S) Women’s Soccer team won the 2024 first edition Concacaf W Gold Cup Final, emerging victorious over Brazil with a score of 1-0 in front of a sellout crowd of 31,528 at the Snapdragon Stadium.
Lindsey Horan's header goal in the additional minutes in the first half contributes to the U.S. trophy collection with 15 in the CONCACAF competitions.
The first half saw Brazil exhibit early dominance, pressuring the U.S. defense with notable attempts, including a free kick in the 9 minutes from Duda Ferreira Sampaio, who brushed the outer net, and Gabi Nunes, who shot off target on the failed ball clearance of the U.S goalkeeper error in the 15 minutes. Nunes had another chance in the 22 minutes when she got behind the defense but shot wide.
However, the U.S. remained vigilant and kept building momentum on set pieces. They warned Brazil in the 40 minutes from a corner kick but well-defended, resulting in a weak header by Horan that the keeper dove on the ball for the save.
The U.S. found the mark in the first-half stoppage time when Horan jumped for a header that landed in the far side net off a cross from Emily Fox.
In the second half, both teams came out of the break ready to achieve their objectives. Brazil came out with better intensity, but the U.S. matched their assault on defense and counterattack.
As the time clock ticked, Brazil moved more players in the attack, seeking the equalizer. They created a few opportunities with Geyse, who came close to equalizing in the 85 minutes, narrowly missing the target.
The United States maintained their defensive resilience and clinched a 1-0 victory against Brazil in the inaugural Women's Championship Gold Cup, with Horan's decisive goal of the match.
