Charlotte, N.C. - After a hard-fought victory 2-1 against Qatar in the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup opener, Haiti first lost against Mexico, then Honduras 1-2 at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina, in Group B. Both teams are out of the tournament.
With Qatar defeating Mexico 1-0 in the Group B match, Honduras and Haiti have been eliminated from the tournament and shifted their focus to the upcoming Concacaf Nations League, scheduled to begin in September. This competition offers a chance to qualify for the 2024 Concacaf Nations League Final Four and the 2024 Copa America in the United States.
Early in the game, Haiti seemed more comfortable making plays that nearly resulted in a goal. In the 11th minute, Duckens Nazon passed a through ball for Derrick Etienne Jr inside the penalty box and came face-to-face with Honduras goalkeeper Edrick Menjivar but shot wide.
In the 20th minute, Haiti converted their early opportunities into a lead when forward Frantzdy Pierrot scored a goal. Nazon, inside the penalty area, cut back to his right leg and shot to the second post, saved by Menjivar, but failed to clear the ball within the five yards, allowing Pierrot to tap it in from close range and put Haiti in a promising position to advance.
Despite Haiti opening the score, the team failed on other chances created, and Honduras intensified their efforts and exploited from all angles to attack Haiti.
In the 24th minute, defender Devron Garcia narrowly missed heading the ball into the goal from a corner kick. Then, in the 28th minute, Joseph Rosales got off a shot from long range but went wide. The forward Jorge Benguche created an opportunity in the box, but his shot was saved by Haiti goalkeeper Alexandre Pierre in the 30th minute, who dived to his right to deny the equalizer.
Honduras continued to press for an equalizer, and their perseverance paid off in the 42nd minute. The defender Maylor Nunez received a pass on the offensive right wing and crossed it for Jerry Bengtson, who beat the defender to the ball, heading it into the back post. Bengtson, 36-year-old became the oldest to score a goal for Honduras in the Gold Cup.
Inside the two minutes additional, Honduras almost added the second goal before the halftime whistle. Bengtson received a loose ball just inside the box and shot for a tough save by the goalkeeper Pierre.
Haiti, which needs a win to secure a spot in the quarterfinals, could not find the balance to impose their game.
Eventually, in the 59th minute, the midfielder Jorge Alvarez scooped the ball over the defensive line of Haiti for Jose Pinto with the first touch to control the ball and finishes to the far post.
Haiti created several other opportunities for goals but could not find the net. In the 63rd minute, Etienne put a through ball for Nazon inside the box that GarcÃa made the slightest contact with to deviate it just a bit. Players contested that it was a penalty because the defender made contact with the right foot of Nazon, but the referee thought it was clean.
In stoppage time, Haiti came agonizingly close to equalizing when forward Fafa Picault attempted a long-range shot that took a tricky bounce in front of the goal, leaving Menjivar beaten. Fortunately for Honduras, the ball struck the post, and the goalkeeper on the rebound lounged on it safely.
Haiti finished last in the group with 3 points, and Honduras 3rd with 4 points but was eliminated from the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2023. With the Nations League around the corner in September, both teams look ahead to compete for more competition.
