Charlotte, N.C. - Jesus Ferreira picked up where he left off against Saint Kitts and Nevis with a sensational performance to lead the United States to a resounding 6-0 victory against Trinidad and Tobago in their Group A finale of the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup, solidifying the top spot in the Group and a place in the quarterfinals.
Ferreira made history by becoming the first player to score hat tricks in two Gold Cup matches within the same tournament edition. Additionally, he became the first U.S. player to achieve consecutive hat tricks.
The opening goal came in the 14th minute when DeJuan Jones, the American defender, ventured forward into the box to deliver a low cross pass to Ferreira.
The young talent made the first touch looks essential to position himself to fire. It is the exact first touch on his third goal against Saint Kitts and Nevis in his last game, a one-touch on the ball that instantly put him in position to hit the target, except this time, he got off the shot faster without allowing it the ball to touch the grass after the control. He slotted the ball past Trinidad and Tobago's goalkeeper, Marvin Phillip, for the U.S. 1-0.
The U.S. extended their lead in the 38th minute. Alejandro Zendejas called for a through ball running on the left wing behind the defense from the midfielder Djordje Mihailovic and crossed to Ferreira, who scored on a second attempt after the goalkeeper deflected the floating ball.
Just before halftime in the 3-minute additional, Ferreira completed his hat trick by confidently converting the penalty, giving his team a commanding 3-0 lead.
Even though Trinidad and Tobago saw their effort with Shannon Gomez firing a shot from about 18 yards, only to see it hit the post, denying them a goal, it was all the U.S.
The U.S. forward Cade Cowell seized on an errant pass from a Trinidad and Tobago player and got on a one-on-one with Phillip. Cowell faked shot the goalkeeper to drop and move past him to also put the defender on the ground before finishing with his right foot to open his goal-scoring account for the United States and his first-ever Gold Cup goal.
The fifth goal came in the 79th minute, with DeAndre Yedlin combining well with Julian Gressel, who found Gianluca Busio. He unleashed a right-footed strike to register also his first goal for the United States.
Last, in stoppage time, forward Brandon Vazquez came off the bench to complete the rout, capitalizing on a pass from Cowell to finish the scoring spree, 6-0 for the United States.
The U.S. secures the top position in Group A and advances to the quarterfinals, where they await the runner-up of Group D.
