On Wednesday night, Inter Miami CF played the quarterfinals away at the Protective Stadium in Birmingham, (AL) and defeated Birmingham Legion FC in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup 1-0 to advance for their first Cup semifinals.

The first half began with both teams pressuring on the attack. Nicolás Stefanelli started to make his presence felt in the 4-minute with a long-range right-footed shot from the left side of the box blocked by the defender. After 45 minutes plus one minute extra, the two teams could not capitalize on opportunities to open the score at the half.

Early on, in the second half, Inter Miami doubled the effort on attacking. Stefanelli would score in the 56th minute with a right-footed shot from the center of the box to the top right corner from a right-wing cross by Corentin Jean to put Miami up 1-0 against Birmingham.

Rodolfo Pizzaro # 20 made his comeback on the pitch for Inter Miami from over a month of injury in the 72nd minute. He showed good signs right away in the 73rd minute for Miami with a right-footed shot from outside the box but saved by the goalkeeper.

The game continued to unfold, with Inter Miami trying to add a second goal. Drake Callender shows the opponent why the United States Men's National Team (USMNT) selects him by making a critical save in the 84th minute to keep the rival scoreless from a more than 35 yards out left-footed shot by Tyler Pasher.

Miami held on to the narrow 1-0 lead to advance to their first semifinals in their history in the U.S. Open Cup. This victory also marks the interim head coach Javier Morales's first win for the team in his second appearance.

“This win is very important, not just for us as a team, but for the whole organization." said interim head coach Morales. "We're very happy and proud of the players and everyone around the team."

Inter Miami CF is only two wins from their first championship trophy and will play Cincinnati at TQL Stadium of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup semifinals on Aug. 23.

Inter Miami CF will continue its next road game against the New England Revolution at the Gillette Stadium this Saturday, 10, at 7:30 p.m. ET in the MLS regular season.
