Houston, Texas - In the opening match of Group B in the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup group stage, Haiti grabbed a thrilling 2-1 victory over Qatar at NRG Stadium.
The match started with Qatar testing Haiti's goalkeeper, Alexandre Pierre, as Bassam Al Rawi unleashed a long-range shot in the 11th minute.
In the 20th minute, Yusuf Abdurisag put the tournament invitees ahead with a splendid curling shot inside the box into the net.
Haiti seized an opportunity to level the score just before halftime when a handball occurred in the 44th minute. Duckens Nazon confidently stepped up and nailed the penalty kick for his eighth career Gold Cup goal.
Playing injury time after the 90th minute, Haiti secured the game-winning goal during a breakaway opportunity. Nazon pushed the ball forward over the top on the left wing for Carnejy Antoine, who got into the box and crossed to Frantzdy Pierrot, who sealed the defender behind him and slid tap the ball to the back of the net in the 97th minute.
Haiti mounted the comeback against Qatar to win 2-1. This encounter marked the first official meeting between the two nations.
Haiti will continue its campaign in Group B against Mexico on June 29 at State Farm Stadium.
